Patrick joined Trinity Chambers in October 2016 after spending five years practising from a leading Family Law set on the Western Circuit. Patrick practises exclusively in Family Law, with a strong emphasis on private and public law children. 

He regularly conducts multi – day, complex hearings and recognises the importance of dealing with matters thoroughly whilst endeavouring to resolve problems as soon as possible

Public Law Children

Patrick is an experienced Public Law practitioner and represents Local Authorities, Parents and the Children’s Guardian. Patrick is also regularly instructed to represent interveners seeking party status.

During his five years practising on the Western Circuit, Patrick has amassed a wealth of experience acting at all stages of proceedings, in particular contested hearings and complex multi-day final hearings. Notably, Patrick has acted on a number of multi-day fact finding hearings including non-accidental injury and VHCC cases. He is also able to deal with highly sensitive FGM or honour based violence cases. 

Human Rights  

Patrick has developed a niche advice and representation practice in relation to Human Rights Act claims both for and against Local Authorities, specifically in relation to breaches of Article 6 and 8 ECHR. Recently, Patrick successfully represented a Respondent Father seeking damages against the Local Authority for an unlawful s.20 placement. 

Financial Remedy  

Patrick has been commended as a practical and astute advocate within financial remedy proceedings. He has experience at all stages of proceedings; from FDA to multi-day final hearings. Patrick has a specific interest in ante-nuptial agreements and regularly conducts CPD seminars for solicitors on this topic.

International Child Abduction: Hague Convention/Brussels II  

Patrick has represented parents in the High Court seeking summary return or in relation to wrongful removal of children from the Jurisdiction. He has a specific interest in this area having written his thesis for his LLM on the relevance of the voice of the child within international child abduction cases.

Court of Protection  

Patrick has a key interest in Court of Protection work. He accepts a broad range of instructions in matters arising under the Mental Capacity Act 2005, with an emphasis on health and welfare issues.

Private Law Children

Patrick has in depth experience representing parents, grandparents, special guardians and Children’s Guardian. He is a sought-after advocate for intractable contact disputes and fact-finding hearings dealing with allegations of domestic violence, sexual abuse and physical harm.

Cohabitation and TOLATA  

Patrick can provide advice and representation in matters concerning cohabitation issues and disputes between parties which involve the Trusts of Land and Appointment of Trustees Act 1996 (TOLATA). 

Family Law Act Injunctions 

Patrick has extensive experience in applications for Non-Molestation Orders and Occupation Orders. He is able to act at all stages of the process from emergency applications, ex-parte and inter-parties, return date to contested hearings. He can also undertake committal hearings.

CASES 

Re AF, BF, CF, DF, EF and FF - VHCC multi day fact find involving significant allegations of violence towards 6 children. Representation of the mother who was identified as being one of the two possible perpetrators.Due to the complex nature of the hearing it was heard over a period of 6 months.

 

Re CA and AA – Representation of a father with learning difficulties within care proceedings and then further representation in regard to an application under the Human Rights Act 1998 for damages in respect of abuse of a s.20 CA 1989 agreement. The Local Authority admitted breaching the parents Human Rights.

 

Re JL – 5 day contested final care hearing. The case involved complex cross examination of a voice recognition expert following disputed phone calls.

 

Re MF – Representation of father who was identified in the pool of perpetrators following 3 alleged Non Accidental Injuries on a child. The child is returned to the care of the parents following final hearing.

LECTURES & SEMINARS

Patrick regularly gives seminars to solicitors on a range of topics. Most recently he has spoken about the continuing relevance of the Married Women’s Property Act. Patrick also has in depth experience in the training of social workers and other professionals operating in the Justice System.

Outside of his practice, Patrick can often be seen either playing rugby or walking his miniature dachshund, Gus, along the beaches in Tynemouth.
