Birju joined Trinity Chambers as a pupil in January 2024. He is undertaking a civil/commercial pupillage and is training under the supervision of James McHugh.


Birju’s practical expertise is in professional discipline and regulation. He sits as a Panel Chair for the Nursing and Midwifery Council and as a Lay Member for the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service. Since 2020, he has been a Governor at a High School in North Tyneside and has also sat on admission appeals for Newcastle City Council. Birju is an accredited mediator registered with the Civil Mediation Council and hopes to develop further mediation experience in future.

Birju arrives at the Bar after a career in academia and remains an Assistant Professor in Law at the University of Northumbria. Amongst other responsibilities, he was the Law School’s Bar Admissions Tutor and chaired the Scholarship Committee. Until recently, he acted as an External Examiner in Professional Ethics for the Bar Standards Board. Having completed a doctorate, his main academic expertise is in international criminal justice. He has presented his work at home and abroad, and his research has been published in leading academic journals. Further information can be found here.

Birju most enjoys time with family which, since 2021, includes the addition of a young daughter. When not entertaining her, he enjoys long walks with his springer spaniel and watching cricket. He enjoys an occasional 10k run and in the future would like to recommence Scuba Diving, having earlier completed twenty dives.
