BACKGROUND

Emelia is currently undertaking a specialist criminal pupillage and will shortly begin accepting instructions in both criminal and regulatory matters.

Prior to pupillage, Emelia studied at the University of Law, where she was awarded the Advocacy Scholarship at Newcastle and served as Head of the Advocacy Committee. She has developed a broad advocacy background, including qualifications in LAMDA public speaking. Emelia is known for her personable approach and her ability to communicate clearly and effectively with clients and professionals alike, building rapport with people from all walks of life.

During the first six months of pupillage, Emelia has gained experience across a broad range of criminal and regulatory matters under the supervision of Josh Normanton and John Crawford. She has observed hearings in Crown Courts both locally and across the country, providing her with insight into different Court environments and a variety of advocacy styles in both prosecution and defence work.

Her experiences during pupillage include assisting on a broad variety of matters, as well as many serious and complex cases, including a murder trial following Toby Hedworth K.C., Head of Chambers. She has also observed several trials involving RASSO matters, which have given her a considerable understanding of the sensitive management of cases involving vulnerable witnesses and participants.

Her pupillage has also provided exposure to many distinctive matters, including cases concerning insanity and the use of expert evidence in criminal proceedings, and has assisted with a range of drafting and advisory work. She has also observed proceedings in the Guernsey Court of Appeal and a High Court judicial review concerning confiscation proceedings under the Proceeds of Crime Act, with Josh Normanton.

Emelia has also gained experience in regulatory work involving emerging areas of law, including issues surrounding the regulation and licensing of the cannabis, hemp and CBD market. Further, Emelia has shadowed Steven Reed during a range of police misconduct proceedings on behalf of both police officers and police authorities, including an accelerated misconduct hearing.

Alongside this work, Emelia also has observed criminal cases at all stages of proceedings, from first appearance through to sentencing. She has experience in drafting common applications addressing bad character, hearsay, advice and applications to dismiss, as well as providing draft defence statements.

Prior to and during pupillage, Emelia has marshalled with HHJ Gittins and Recorder Stubbs at Newcastle Crown Court, providing her with valuable insight into Court proceedings from judicial perspectives.

Emelia commences her second six of pupillage on 07 April 2026.
