Acquittal for Trinity’s Sophie Johnstone on Eleven Count Indictment of Serious Sexual Offending

Trinity Criminal and Regulatory barrister, Sophie Johnstone represented a young man charged with eleven counts of serious sexual offending (rape, attempted rape, assault penetration and exposure).

Following an eight day trial at Teesside Crown Court, Sophie’s client was acquitted of all counts retaining his previous good character.

This complex case required careful examination of unused material showing contemporaneous text messaging contact between the complainant and her mother. The defence deployed this material at trial to show an alternative narrative to that which the complainant was alleging.

Sophie Johnstone was instructed by Matthew Agar of McGee McGee Agar Law.

Sophie’s practice encompasses a broad range of serious offending, including serious sexual offences, conspiracy to supply drugs and offences of serious violence and kidnap.
