Trinity's latest tenant, barrister, Tom Mitchell has joined Trinity Chambers' Criminal, ADR, Regulatory and Judicial Review practice groups.
Tom is a well-known criminal defence barrister on the North Eastern Circuit. He is recognised for his defence of allegations of organised crime, homicide and serious offences alleged against young, vulnerable and mentally disordered defendants.
Recently he was instructed on behalf of the principal defendant in the conspiracy to murder reported internationally as the North Yorkshire “Columbine” case.
He has particular experience in cases involving disputes about the cogency and interpretation of DNA, fingerprints and other forms of bio forensic evidence having been junior counsel in the leading LCN DNA appeal of Reed, Reed and Garmson [2010] 1 Cr App R 310 (23) .
In addition to his extensive criminal defence practice, Tom is an experienced police mis-conduct barrister dealing with a wide range of cases including powers of arrest, search and seizure. Tom accepts instructions in both civil and disciplinary police proceedings. He is also legally qualified to chair (North Eastern forces) police conduct hearings.
Joining Trinity's growing Alternative Dispute Resolution Team, Tom is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and accepts instructions to examine and arbitrate disputes related to complaints arising from the conduct of elected members and officers in local government and other public bodies as well as allegations surrounding conduct of officers and members of clubs and other associations.
