On Sunday 20 September 2020 the inaugural "Peter Walsh Memorial Cricket Match" took place between Trinity Chambers and Corbridge Cricket Club.
A longstanding and fondly regarded member of Chambers, Peter sadly passed away in April this year. As many will have been aware, Peter was an avid sportsman. Having lived in Corbridge, Peter was a long term supporter of Corbridge Cricket Club and Corbridge United Junior Football Club, playing and coaching at each.
Despite being a busy criminal barrister, Peter enjoyed bringing people together to play cricket and socialise in the bar afterwards. Members of the Club and Chambers were keen to provide a fitting tribute and so organised what will become an annual match in Peter's memory, the prize for which will be his cap that will be framed and kept in the club house. Peter's colleagues from Trinity fielded a team captained by David Comb playing against members of Corbridge Cricket Club. "Corbridge won the toss and elected to field. Trinity started slowly, thanks to some fine bowling by Conor Jowsey, and then Graham Thrower, in his first game for decades, took a wicket with his first ball. Trinity were wobbling! However, some fine batting in the middle order from Hilton (30 n.o.), Richard Stubbs (30 n.o.), Jenny Wilkes (23, all through mid-wicket!) and Paul Kerfoot (16) saw Trinity reach 153 from their 25 overs. Mike Stephenson was the pick of the bowlers with 2-22 and Nick Oliver bowled well at the end, going for only 5 in the final over.
Corbridge had a strong batting line-up however, and took the field with confidence after the break. Unfortunately that confidence did not last long, with Corbridge reduced to 2-2 thanks to some fine left arm opening bowling from McKenzie and neither Conor Jowsey or Shaun Fenwick troubled the scorers. Then Graeme Tiffin (18) began to open up following his 41 on Saturday, ably assisted by Dave Smurthwaite (17). Once both were out to fine bowling by Alex Littlefair, John Maude (26) and Mike Stephenson (15) continued the charge but when they eventually fell, Corbridge required 44 off the last 4 overs. Will Clouston and Chris Jowsey set about the bowling but the return of McKenzie and Tom Tyson eventually led to Trinity Chambers running out deserved winners by 30 runs with 11 balls remaining. McKenzie finished with 3-8, Goldberg 2-19 and Tyson 2-24.
The game was played for Peter Walsh's cricket cap, which will be framed in the club house, and the match will become an annual fixture in memory of Peter. Donations were also raised for the proposed electronic scoreboard, which will be dedicated to Peter once the target funds are achieved."
