James McHugh Guest Speaker at Law Society In-House Counsel Networking Event

Trinity Chambers' Custom House on Newcastle's Quayside will be the venue for the first Law Society In-house Network social drinks event of 2025, to be held between 5.30pm and 7.30pm on the evening of Thursday 6th March.

The established networking event is an opportunity for the region’s in-house lawyers to meet up, share their experiences with colleagues, as well as gain some technical legal updates from industry expert guest speakers.

The Worker Protection Act 2023, effective from 26 October 2024, amends the Equality Act 2010, imposing a legal duty on employers to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. It is no longer adequate to merely address complaints and incidents after they occur. The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) now has the authority to take enforcement action against organisations that fail to take reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment. Additionally, Employment Tribunals can increase compensation for sexual harassment by up to 25% if an employer is found to have breached their preventative duty.

As part of the Law Society in-house networking event, Trinity Employment and Discrimination Law barrister, James McHugh will be delivering a talk explaining what employers need to know to stay on the right side of this new sexual harassment legislation.

James' session will then be followed by a presentation on the Law Society's in-house ethics framework.

The evening will include refreshments, networking and the chance to have a tour of Trinity's historic Georgian star listed Custom House.

This free to attend networking evening is open exclusively to in-house counsel, including junior in-house counsel. To find out more and book please visit here. As spaces are limited, please confirm your attendance no later than Thursday 27 February 2025.
