Mairi Clancy Secures Conviction of "Dangerous" Offender in Case Involving a "Vicious" Multiple Stab Wound Attack

Instructed by the CPS, Trinity Criminal barrister, Mairi Clancy secured a guilty verdict following a 4-day jury trial at Durham Crown Court.

The defendant was charged with wounding with intent and possession of a bladed article in a public place.

The defendant stabbed the victim to his chest twice. As the victim tried to get away, the defendant pulled him back and stabbed him twice more in the back.

The defendant then fled the scene, taking the knife with him. He boarded a bus nearby where members of the public saw him covered in blood and behaving strangely. When the defendant got off the bus, he hid the knife in a bin in Peterlee bus station.

The victim was left bleeding heavily and suffered life-threatening injuries.

Forensic evidence confirmed that the knife found in the bin had the victim's blood on the blade, and the defendant's DNA on the handle.

The defendant was sentenced to 8 years 6 months in prison.

At the sentencing hearing, Mairi made submissions on the dangerousness provisions. The Court found the defendant to be a "dangerous" offender and passed an extended sentence. The defendant must serve at least two-thirds of his sentence in custody before he can be considered for release by the parole board.
