Trinity Chambers’ Regulatory barrister James Kemp represented Hartlepool Borough Council at the trial and sentence hearing of a local care home owner Matt Matharu who was found guilty by jury at Teesside Crown Court for breaches of health and safety which resulted in the death of a resident at the care home.
At the sentence the Judge Michael Taylor told Matt Matharu that his "reckless disregard" for health and safety was to blame for the 90-year-old's death and commented his knowledge of health and safety and the training given to staff as "rudimentary in the extreme".
Matharu was jailed for a total of eight months and ordered to pay costs of more than £70,000.
