Timothy Gittins, barrister at Trinity Chambers represented the widow and family of Peter Maine at a Coroner's Inquest held on 7th January in Crook, County Durham. The Inquest was undertaken by Coroner, Mr Andrew Tweddle, following the fatal stabbing of 56 year old solicitor Peter Maine in September 2013 in Durham City.
Following the Inquest Mr Tweddle recorded an open verdict concluding that he could not be sure that Mr Maine was the victim of homicide, nor could it be proved beyond reasonable doubt that the death was suicide.
On behalf of the family at the conclusion of the Inquest,Timothy Gittins read the following statement:
"After 16 months and at the end of a long and thorough investigation by Durham Constabulary and the inquest, we still do not know what happened to Peter on the morning of September 1 2013 which is a burden that our family and friends will most likely have to carry for the rest of our lives...Peter was a good and kind man who was very much loved by his family and friends. He is greatly missed and we will all continue to grieve our loss."
