Trinity Chambers' specialist licensing barrister, Charles Holland was a guest speaker at an all day regional Licensing Conference entitled "Tackling alcohol in our communities - Are the new licensing powers the answer to our problems?". The event, held at the Ramside Hotel on 3rd July, was organised by Balance, the North East Alcohol Office, in partnership with the North East Strategic Licensing Group (NESLG).
Charles Holland provided a legal perspective covering the implications of the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011. As well as delivering a talk on the new licensing provisions, Charles was also involved in facilitating the afternoon workshop events.
The Opening Address was given by Councillor Paul Watson, Leader of Sunderland City Council and Chair of the Association of North East Councils. The conference also featured presentations from Andy Parsons from The Home Office, who explained how the new powers were being applied; Sue Robinson, Crime & Disorder Programme Manager, Balance who explored the opportunities for change the new provisions would bring and Dr Evelyn Gillan, Alcohol Focus Scotland who covered the licensing changes in Scotland. There were also presentations from Police Authorities and Local Authorities sharing views and best practice.
Over 100 delegates attended the event including representatives from Local Authorities, Police Authorities, HM Revenue and Customs and the NHS from across the region. Delegates also travelled from Yorkshire and the North West.
Charles is a member of Trinity Chambers' Licensing Group and regularly delivers seminars and lectures in relation to all aspects of licensing including liquor, taxis, public entertainment, firearms and judicial review proceedings relating to licensing.
