Trinity barristers Timothy Spain and Kevin Crawley both appear in a full-length feature film based in an anonymous northern city entitled “Bypass” starring George MacKay. Filmed in Newcastle upon Tyne in the summer of 2013 "Bypass" was produced by locally based Third Films.
The film had its premiere at the Tyneside Cinema on Friday 10 April 2015 and initially runs until Thursday 16 April. The film will also be screened at Middlesbrough Town Hall on 23rd April as well as venues across the country. The film exhibited at the Venice Film Festival at which it won a prize. It has already recieved widespread critical acclaim-“beautifully shot and acted with a radical expressionism and unalloyed empathy for its transcending central character" New York Times;“a potent story about Britain's invisible youth” The Guardian;"portrays a harsh contemporary reality with a rawness that confirms Hopkins as a distinctive filmmaking voice" Hollywood Reporter.
In the scene near the beginning of the film, Kevin Crawley appears as a Court Clerk and Timothy Spain plays the Judge passing sentence on the brother of the principal character. The Court scene was filmed at Newcastle's Moot Hall which is still regularly used by the Court Service.
