Barristers from Trinity's Professional Disciplinary and Misconduct team welcomed delegates from across England at Chambers' Police Misconduct seminar held on 8th February 2023.
The event was held at Trinity's Custom House on Newcastle's Quayside with a range of expert industry speakers including Trinity Professional Disciplinary/Misconduct barrister, Steven Reed. Steven, previously a Police Superintendent before coming to the Bar, regularly represents Police Officers and Police Authorities at Misconduct Hearings across England. With their experience of working closely with the Police Federation and Superintendents Association, Mark and Jason Smith, directors at DJMS Solicitors also spoke at the event and panel discussions. Joining the panel of speakers was Mick Kelliher, formerly of Northumbria Police with over 30 years’ service. For the majority of that time Mick was a Police Federation representative, before becoming full-time Complaints and Performance Liaison Officer (CAPLO) for the force.
The well attended event attracted senior Police Federation representatives from forces across England, including Staffordshire, Lincolnshire, Hampshire, Merseyside, Derbyshire, Kent, Lancashire, Cheshire, the Midlands, the London Met, as well as from the Police Federation's HQ in Leatherhead.
In addition to being an opportunity to network with industry colleagues and engage in panel discussions, the session covered a wide range of topical subjects including the expansion of Misconduct in Public Office, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and the Equality Act 2010.
Feedback from the event included:
"Relevant content to today’s issues. Varied members of the presentation team providing spread of knowledge and experience. Topics were very relevant to current issues. Friendly and welcoming firm. Comfortable learning environment. Enjoyed the day, thanks all."
"It was relaxed and focused with a good case study, which is the best way I find to learn. It was a good sized group and there was some good discussions on other areas of our work."
"An invaluable opportunity to discuss issues with a barrister, two lawyers and a number of other CAPLO’s from around the country. It is not often that we get the chance to do this in an informal setting but the learning and knowledge sharing that this brings is imperative if we want to develop into better CAPLO’s for our members. Thoroughly worth attending and I look forward to any future events."
