Trinity's Toby Hedworth Q.C. leading Steven Reed were part of the defence team representing Soong Hert Fong at Newcastle Crown Court.
Mr Fong was accused of murdering his wife of 28 years, Pek Ying Ling, by suffocation with a pillow in a Newcastle hotel. The incident took place in December 2021 as the couple were visiting the UK from Singapore as part of a tour of Europe.
During the trial Mr Fong admitted to murder after an initial admission of manslaughter. Following representations by his defence team, he was sentenced to life with a minimum term of least 12 and a half years.
In his mitigation, Toby Hedworth Q.C. highlighted that Mr Fong was
"Bewildered, devastated and broken - that's the man to be sentenced this morning. A man now living a nightmare from which he cannot wake. This is a genuine picture agreed on all sides of a close, happy, loving family with two parents devoted to each other and their three sons."
Mr Hedworth added, "What has been and remains difficult for the defendant is he still continues to be unable to understand how he could do such a thing. He continues to have no real recollection of what in fact happened in that room that night."
