On the morning of Thursday 12th September, Trinity Chambers hosted the launch by The Angelou Centre of their "Sexual Harassment Toolkit: A guide for working with black and minoritised women in the North of England".
The Newcastle based Angelou Centre has for over 25 years provided a range of holistic services for Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) women across the North East region. As well as front line support, the team also work at strategic and national levels ensuring the voices of BME women are represented and heard.
The toolkit has been developed in response to the issue of sexual harassment of minority women in the North East and the aim of the launch event was to expand awareness within professional services and the public and charity sector. During the briefing, The Angelou Centre team provided an update of the work they have done, their research findings, details of the toolkit, as well as highlighting the support network available to those affected.
Northumbria Police Chief Inspector, Stephen Wykes also contributed to the fully booked session by discussing the particular challenges his officers face and the positive impact of Operation Cloak, an initiative to protect vulnerable women in Newcastle City Centre's busy "night time economy". He also emphasised the value of working collaboratively and in partnership with organisations such as the Angelou Centre.
