Trinity Chambers' Michael Malone has been invited to be a guest speaker at Liverpool Law Society's 2024 Employment Law Conference. The hybrid Conference takes place on Wednesday 2nd October, 2024 and is aimed at employment and discrimination lawyers across a range of experience levels.
Michael's talk is entitled: 'Where Rights Conflict - a Minefield for Employers'.
If employees are dismissed or disciplined for their religious or other beliefs then this is regarded as unlawful discrimination. However, the way some employees express their beliefs can appear threatening to other employees or clients and may even amount to discrimination or harassment. Michael's session reviews the complex and expanding case law on these types of conflicts and the need for Employment Tribunals (and employers and HR professionals) to have regard to the European Convention on Human Rights, as well as the Equality Act.
The Conference programme also includes the following topics and speakers:
- Sex, Lies & Employment Law - What the future holds with a new government - David Jones, Barrister
- AI for Law Firms: How it's reshaping legal - Regina O'Shaughnessy, Clio
- Tribunals Update - Employment Judge, David Franey
- Whistleblowing - David Tinkler, Barrister
- Employment Law Round Up - Martin Mensah, Barrister
Michael was previously a Partner in Mace & Jones, specialising in employment law before becoming a salaried employment judge in Newcastle, where one of his cases was hearing a challenge to the NHS Agenda for Change pay scheme. As a CEDR accredited mediator at Trinity Chambers, Michael undertakes mediations in employment and civil litigation cases, as well as workplace mediation. Michael is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. His publications include Discrimination Law (Kogan Page 1995) and (with Martin Edwards) two editions of Tolley’s Equal Opportunities Handbook.
The Conference takes place between 9:30am and 3pm. Whilst also online, for those attending in person, the venue is the offices of Taylor Wessing, Edward Pavilion, Albert Dock, Liverpool, L3 4AF. For further details and to book, please visit here.
