Trinity Criminal and Regulatory barrister, Sophie Johnstone instructed by Lana Kasagic of Watson Woodhouse Solicitors, secured the acquittal of her client charged with a single count of rape following a four-day trial at Teesside Crown Court.
Sophie Johnstone, along with Lana Kasagic and Amelia Atkinson of Watson Woodhouse Solicitors prepared the case meticulously for trial. The preparation of which involved an extensive review of the client’s phone download and the unused material. The trial raised issues of hearsay and concerned recent complaint evidence.
The defence was one of consent and evidence was received from the complainant and a number of complaint witnesses who had been called shortly after the alleged incident. The complainant was extensively cross examined on her accounts.
Following the unanimous acquittal, Sophie Johnstone’s client, who is only 21 years of age, retained his good character.
Sophie Johnstone accepts instructions for all matters of criminal cases, including serious sexual offences.
