Philip Engelman of Trinity Chambers appeared for UKIP and two others in the Court of Appeal on 21st July 2011, UKIP & Another v Hardy.

The issue before the Court was whether UKIP or its Stockton-on-Tees Branch (or the Chairman of the Branch) had wrongfully expelled a party member. The Court of Appeal found against UKIP but upheld the appeal by both the Branch Chairman and the Branch itself.

The reasons for the Court’s decision have been reserved, but it is anticipated that they will deal with the construction of and legal principles applicable to the rules of political parties.

Philip is the head of Trinity Chambers' Administrative and Public Law Group, dealing with Judicial Review and other Public Law matters. Whilst Trinity has Chambers in Newcastle and Middlesbrough many members of the Administrative and Public Law Group travel nationwide dealing with hearings.
