A recognised specialist in the Business and Property Courts in the north east and throughout England and Wales, Jonathan has a client base across the country and is always willing to travel nationwide in pursuit of his clients’ objectives. He covers all aspects of Business and Property work: commercial and traditional chancery, real property, landlord and tenant and insolvency. He also has a related expertise in licensing and business regulation. He is the only barrister to be highly ranked by Chambers & Partners in all four Business and Property categories in the north east—Restructuring/Insolvency, Chancery, Real Estate Litigation and Commercial Dispute Resolution.

Jonathan combines intellectual heavyweight, practical commercial acumen, good judgment of characters and personalities and a relentless appetite for work. His goal is to provide a flexible, responsive service, pragmatic and commercial advice and effective representation in his fields of practice. He has an uncanny ability to communicate effectively at all levels with Judges, clients, witnesses and litigants in person. Judges in particular regard him highly for his sensitivity in handling the latter.

Jonathan sits as a Deputy District Judge on the North Eastern Circuit and as a Fee-paid (part-time) Employment Judge of the Employment Tribunals in the North Eastern Region.

Jonathan is fully equipped for remote working and has available to him at home a dedicated 350mbps (upstream and downstream) internet connection, together with the latest and most comprehensive hardware and software solutions. This enables him to participate in multi-way and multiple video-conferences in high definition, to produce and to send and receive large volume e-bundles and to provide advice and representation in any scenario regardless of distance. He is adept at appearing in Court remotely on a variety of platforms and is well-versed in the production and management of e-documents. At the outset of the current public health emergency, Jonathan worked with the north east's senior judiciary to develop remote working methods in the Business and Property Courts in Newcastle and Leeds. Already he has established in-depth experience of conducting multi-day trials, contested applications and conferences remotely.
